The story of Bobcat begins in 1958 in Gwinner, North Dakota, when farmer Eddie Velo approached brothers Cyril and Louis Keller with a problem: he needed a machine small and manoeuvrable enough to clean out turkey barns without disturbing the structural posts inside. The Keller brothers built a three-wheeled loader to solve the problem, and in doing so created the world's first skid steer loader — a machine concept that would go on to transform the construction, agriculture, and landscaping industries worldwide.

The Melroe Manufacturing Company recognised the potential of the Keller brothers' invention and purchased the rights to manufacture and develop the machine, launching it commercially under the Bobcat name in 1962. The name was chosen to reflect the machine's key attributes — agility, quickness, and toughness — qualities that remain at the heart of every Bobcat machine built today. Melroe was subsequently acquired by Clark Equipment Company, and the Bobcat brand later passed through Ingersoll-Rand before being acquired by Doosan in 2007. In 2022, Bobcat became an independent brand under the newly formed Doosan Bobcat Inc., now operating as Bobcat Company.
