What is a Turbocharger?

A turbocharger (often simply called a "turbo") is a device fitted to an engine that uses its own exhaust gases to force more air into the engine's cylinders. This process allows the engine to burn more fuel, which significantly increases its power and efficiency without needing to make the engine itself larger.

Think of it like using a fan to blow air into a fire to make it burn hotter and stronger. A turbocharger does the same thing for an engine.

How Does It Work? The Basic Principle

A turbocharger is a simple but clever piece of engineering that consists of two main parts connected by a shaft:

1. The Turbine: Located in the exhaust stream of the engine. As hot exhaust gases leave the engine, they spin the turbine at incredibly high speeds (often over 100,000 RPM).

2. The Compressor: Connected to the turbine by the shaft, it sits in the engine's air intake system. As the turbine spins, it spins the compressor. The compressor then draws in and squeezes (compresses) ambient air, forcing a denser, higher-pressure air charge into the engine's cylinders.

This process is often called forced induction.
