An engine oil dipstick is a simple but critical maintenance tool used to manually check the level and condition of the oil inside an internal combustion engine, like those found in excavators. It consists of a long, flexible metal rod that slides down a tube directly into the engine's oil pan (oil reservoir).

What it Tells You

When you pull the dipstick out, the oil leaves a mark on the bottom tip. This tip features two distinct markings:

• The Marks: Usually denoted by two dots, lines, or a crosshatched area representing MIN (Minimum/Low) and MAX (Maximum/Full). The ideal oil level sits precisely between these two markers.

• Oil Quality: Beyond quantity, looking at the dipstick tells you about the health of the engine. Fresh oil looks honey-colored and clear. If it looks pitch black and gritty, it is time for an oil change. If it looks milky or frothy, it indicates a dangerous coolant leak.

How to Use It Properly

1. Park on level ground and shut off the engine. Let it sit for a few minutes so the oil drains back into the pan.

2. Pull the dipstick out using the brightly colored loop handle (often yellow or orange) and wipe it completely clean with a rag or paper towel.

3. Reinsert it fully back down the tube, wait one second, and pull it back out.

4. Read the level on the tip immediately before the oil starts to run.
