Description
Compatible with the following equipment:
Yanmar Part Number: 729949-51320
A fuel injection pump is a critical component in diesel engines (and some gasoline direct-injection engines). Its primary job is to pressurize fuel and deliver a precise, metered amount of fuel to each injector at exactly the right time for combustion.
Unlike a gasoline engine with a carburetor (which mixes air and fuel passively), a fuel injection pump actively forces fuel into the engine’s cylinders under high pressure.
Key Functions
-
Generate high pressure: Raises fuel pressure high enough to overcome cylinder compression (especially crucial for diesel engines, which require extremely high pressure for auto-ignition).
-
Meter fuel quantity: Delivers exactly the right amount of fuel for the engine load and speed (from idle to full throttle).
-
Time the injection: Controls precisely when the fuel is injected into each cylinder.
-
Distribute fuel: Sends the correct amount to each cylinder in sequence.
Types of Fuel Injection Pumps (Diesel Common)
-
In-line pump: Has one pumping element per cylinder, arranged in a line. Durable and used in heavy-duty/industrial engines.
-
Distributor (rotary) pump: Uses a single pumping element to supply all cylinders via a rotating distributor head. Smaller, lighter, common in older light-duty diesels (e.g., VE pump by Bosch).
-
Unit injector (pump nozzle): Each cylinder has its own pump built into the injector body. Eliminates high-pressure lines, but each unit is complex.
-
Common rail pump: A high-pressure pump fills a common rail (shared manifold) that maintains constant pressure for all injectors. Electronic injectors control timing and quantity. This is the standard on modern diesel engines.
Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Pumps
In modern gasoline engines with direct injection, a high-pressure fuel pump (often a single-piston, cam-driven pump) raises fuel pressure (from the low-pressure tank pump) to several hundred or thousand psi for injection directly into the cylinders.
Common Signs of a Failing Fuel Injection Pump
-
Hard starting or no start
-
Loss of power under load
-
Rough idle or misfires
-
Engine surging or hesitating
-
Excessive smoke from exhaust (black, white, or gray)
-
Unusual noises (whining, ticking from pump area)
Important Note
On many modern vehicles (especially with common rail or GDI systems), what people call the “fuel pump” is often the low-pressure lift pump inside the fuel tank. The injection pump (Injector Pump, Diesel Injection Pump, Injection Pump Assembly, Fuel Injection Pump) is the high-pressure unit usually mounted on the engine and driven by the camshaft or timing gears.
