Lucas Parts stock a range of pins and bushes to fit mini excavators from 0.75 ton up to 40 ton.

Our pins are induction hardened for maximum wear resistance. Made from high carbon steel equal to 40Cr or 45 # steel. Quenching depth from 1.5-2.8mm and hardness is HRC 52-55.

*Note: While AISI/SAE 5140 is the closer equivalent for 40Cr, the more commonly known 4140 is sometimes listed as a substitute due to overlapping properties.

While not direct substitutes, they are often compared in applications like shafts and gears. The core difference lies in performance and cost:

• 40Cr (Alloy Steel): Contains chromium (0.8-1.1%), which significantly increases hardenability and strength. After quenching and tempering, it can achieve higher tensile strength (900-1200 MPa) and hardness (28-36 HRC) than 45# steel. It is suitable for more critical parts that require higher strength, toughness, and wear resistance
• 45# (Carbon Steel): Lacks alloying elements like chromium. Its mechanical properties are good but lower than 40Cr after similar heat treatment (e.g., tensile strength around 600 MPa). Its main advantages are better machinability in the as-supplied state and a lower cost.

Typical Applications:

• 40Cr: Drive shafts, transmission gears, spindles, connecting rods, and high-stress fasteners.
• 45#: General-purpose shafts, cams, lightly loaded gears (often with surface hardening), and various structural components
